  • Introducing Dr. Dan Hocoy

Dan Hocoy, Ph.D., became the 11th president of SUNY Erie Community College in July 2017.

Dr. Hocoy received a B.Sc. from the University of Toronto, and his M.A. and PhD in clinical psychology from Queen’s University in Canada. He is also a graduate of Harvard University’s Management and Leadership in Education executive program as well as the Harvard Seminar for New Presidents. Prior to arriving at ECC, Dr. Hocoy served as Associate Vice Chancellor of Advancement for the nationwide 5-campus Antioch University System after previously presiding as President of Antioch University in Seattle. Over the past 20 years, Dr. Hocoy has provided innovative and effective academic leadership for a number of institutions of higher learning in a variety of capacities including: Provost, Chief Academic Officer, Chief Operating Officer, Chief Student Affairs Officer, Director of Institutional Effectiveness and Accreditation, as well as Director of International Programs and Diversity.

Over his career, Dr. Hocoy has focused on improving student success, developing exciting new programs, and enhancing institutional sustainability. He has designed innovative frameworks for curriculum and modalities for learning that harness the latest pedagogical and technology advancements, including using Facebook as a learning management system (which has been adopted by a number of universities). He has also been successful in partnering with private and public organizations in creating unique academic programming that serve workforce needs and address current community issues.

As a non-native English speaker and the first in his family to go beyond high school, Dr. Hocoy is personally dedicated to providing accessible and affordable, high quality education. With a grandmother from Jamaica, mother from Malaysia, and father from China, and having been an immigrant from Trinidad and Tobago to Canada, Dr. Hocoy has had a long-standing commitment to creating a campus environment and programs that supports diversity, inclusive excellence, and global perspectives.

President Hocoy is author to numerous articles and book chapters that intersect higher learning, psychology, art and culture. His dissertation was the first study to examine the psychological impact of apartheid in South Africa and was solicited by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to structure its processes. Dr. Hocoy’s publications in art therapy are considered seminal to the field and can be found in the discipline’s textbooks, and his curricular innovations are also widely published.

Dr. Hocoy has had a long standing interest in social justice issues and has worked as a consultant to governments and agencies addressing poverty and intergroup conflict. His service in international development (Guyana and Ghana) has endeavored to develop sustainable local programs that mitigate the impact of International Monetary Fund austerity reforms, while his work in inter-religious understanding (India and Italy) has endeavored to create dialogue between groups in conflict.

Dr. Hocoy is also a licensed clinical psychologist and has worked in psychiatric hospitals as well as private practice.
