student Myunghee Kang earned Honorable Mention recognition for her hypnotic and
multicolored oil painting, “Spring” as part of
the SUNY Student Art Best of Show 2016-2017 exhibition. She will accept her
award as part of the event’s reception and awards program, scheduled for June 1
at the SUNY System Administration Building in Albany, New York.
work was one of six ECC student compositions submitted by Brian Porter,
assistant professor of Fine Arts, in the fall of 2016 for the annual art show,
which displays work throughout the hallways and corridors on the SUNY
headquarters. Of the six, four of the submissions—by ECC students Cassandra
Belden, Hannah Dwyer, Kang, and Elizabeth Russo—were chosen for the separate
“Best of Show” category. Kang’s honor came with a $500 prize and was the most
prestigious among the ECC group, which drew wide praise from its SUNY partners,
and was led by the expert direction of Porter—who hosted a show of his own work
throughout the same SUNY exhibition space in 2014.
last fall, ECC’s Fine Arts A.S. degree is designed to facilitate transfer into
four-year B.A. programs for Studio Art, Graphic Design, Art Education, and/or
Photography; and provides students with an excellent foundation that focuses on
developing observational/interpretative skills and proficiency in drawing, 2D
and 3D design, painting, digital foundations, and photography. Students
studying art engage in creative problem solving, critical thinking, sequential
skill building and develop persistence and focus. These are all skills that
help students excel whether they choose to continue their education or enter
